The same "Computer Science" can differ by more than forty places across four ranking tables — U.S. News puts CityU at No. 23 in the world, ARWU/Shanghai Ranking at No. 30, THE at No. 61, and QS at No. 67. This is not a contradiction; it is three completely different evaluation logics scoring independently. 1. Engineering, Computer Science, and Data Science / Artificial Intelligence

CityU grew out of engineering and electronics (its predecessor was the City Polytechnic of Hong Kong, founded in 1984), and engineering and computing have long been its core strengths. But across the different subject tables, these disciplines show wildly divergent positions — a textbook case of "the metric defines the rank."

The same "Computer Science", dozens of places apart across four tables: U.S. News places it at world No. 23, ARWU No. 30, THE No. 61, and QS (Computer Science & Information Systems) No. 67. This is not a contradiction but the result of three different rulers measuring independently: "U.S. News rewards pure research output, QS rewards reputation, THE blends five pillars". CityU's computer science is clearly stronger on the pure-research metrics (U.S. News #23, ARWU #30) than on the reputation metric (QS #67) — consistent with CityU's profile as a young university with high publication output whose academic reputation is still accumulating.

An organisational change worth recording: On 1 September 2024, CityU consolidated the Department of Computer Science, the Department of Data Science (reorganised from the former School of Data Science) and the Department of Biostatistics into a new College of Computing, with then-President Freddy Boey framing the move as a response to "the convergence of interdisciplinary fields". The Department of Computer Science itself has a longer history — established in 1984, it launched its first bachelor's programme in computer studies in 1987 (reorganised as a BSc in Computer Science in 2000). Business / Economics (THE by Subject 2026): CityU's Business & Economics ranks world No. 36, No. 10 in Asia, entering the Hong Kong top 3 for the first time; in ARWU GRAS 2025, Business Administration is one of CityU's 12 subjects ranked No. 1 in Hong Kong. Behind this ranking sits years of accreditation groundwork by the College of Business — CityU's business school received its first AACSB accreditation in 2005 and EQUIS in 2007, and has since passed three consecutive five-year EQUIS reviews in 2013, 2018 and 2023, holding dual accreditation (AACSB + EQUIS). These international business-school accreditations test long-term stability in programme quality, faculty research output and governance — a different evaluation system from single-year ranking movements. The two can corroborate each other but neither can substitute for the other. There is also a dedicated bibliometric ranking of business-school research output: the UT Dallas "UTD Top 100 Business School Research Rankings", which scores papers published in 24 leading journals over 2020–2024, places CityU's College of Business at world No. 42. Like AACSB/EQUIS, this is a "focused bibliometric" metric measuring research output rather than reputation or overall teaching quality; only by reading all three together does a fuller picture of the business school emerge.

Life Sciences (THE by Subject 2026): world No. 80, No. 3 in Hong Kong, up 16 places from No. 96 in the previous edition (the biggest riser among CityU's broad fields in THE 2026).

Linguistics' steady multi-year climb: CityU's Department of Linguistics and Translation did not leap to the top of QS by Subject overnight; it has crept upward year by year — world No. 41 in 2023, world No. 38 in 2025, and world No. 36 in 2026 — making it CityU's highest-ranked and steadiest QS subject. The department's research spans experimental linguistics (psycho-/neurolinguistics), corpus linguistics, computational linguistics and human-machine translation, and it houses one of the region's better-equipped language and cognition laboratories.

Law's multi-year climb: CityU's School of Law jumped from No. 56 to No. 41 in QS by Subject 2026 — a 15-place rise and first entry into the world top 50; THE by Subject 2026 likewise reports world No. 41. Two ranking systems with different methodologies producing the same number in the same year is more notable than a single table's one-year position — it suggests this rise is not the random fluctuation of one survey or one batch of papers, but a movement confirmed simultaneously under two different evaluation logics (reputation in QS, five-pillar synthesis in THE).

The most instructive entry in this table is the law school's case: QS jumped 15 places in one year, while the same subject barely moved in THE (42→41). Two ranking systems can give completely different "rates of change" for the same school, same subject, in the same year — a concrete demonstration, at multi-year scale, of the "do not mix methodologies" point made in Section 5. By contrast, linguistics' three-year steady climb (41→38→36) and business's single-year jump that still needs next year's data to confirm are the two reference frames for judging whether a subject's ranking movement is "solid improvement" or "single-year noise".
