How the Four Global University Rankings Work: QS, THE, U.S. News, ARWU Methodology and Historical Trends for CityU
One university, four verdicts: QS says 52nd, U.S. News says 47th, THE says 73rd, ARWU says 99th. A spread of fifty-odd places isn't noise — it's four different rulers measuring four different things.
On a day in June 2023, QS overhauled its methodology. CityU dropped from 54th to 70th — not because a single department had a bad year, but because the "faculty–student ratio" weighting was halved and three new metrics went live overnight. The ruler itself had changed. Two years later, on that same new ruler, the same university rebounded to 52nd, its best result in over a decade. Behind swings this violent lies a single game: indicator weighting. This article unpacks, ranking by ranking, the year-by-year rank curves and weighting structures of QS, THE, U.S. News, and ARWU, asking one question: what does each league table actually believe in? For a snapshot of CityU's latest positions across all four composite rankings — and the headline that THE has now named CityU the world's most international university for three years running — see the companion piece World Rankings at a Glance; for CityU's five-year trajectory under these methodologies with a subject-level breakdown, see QS & U.S. News: A Five-Year Deep Dive.
3. QS World University Rankings · Historical Trends
Over the past decade, CityU's QS World University Ranking has generally oscillated within the 48th–70th band, consistently placing it among the world's top 100. The 2024 edition saw a temporary dip to 70th following QS's major methodological overhaul (which introduced new indicators for sustainability, employment outcomes, and international research network). The ranking subsequently recovered, with QS 2027 jumping further to 52nd, the university's best result in recent years.
| QS Edition | World Rank | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2027 | 52※ | Rose 11 places from 63rd in the 2026 edition, a recent best※; released June 2026 |
| 2026 | 63※ | Firmly in the global top 100; 1,501 institutions ranked worldwide※ |
| 2025 | 62※ | Recovery after the methodology-change year |
| 2024 | 70※ | Major QS methodology revision; rank dipped |
| 2023 | 54※ | — |
| 2022 | 53 | — |
| 2021 | 48 | Peak for that period |
| 2020 | 52 | — |
| 2019 | 55 | — |
| 2018 | 49 | — |
| 2015 | 57 | — |
Ranks for the 2018–2021 segment (49 / 55 / 52 / 48) and the 2022–2026 segment (53 / 54 / 70 / 62 / 63) have been cross-referenced from QS/TopUniversities historical data※ and a third-party aggregator※; the QS 2027 rank of 52nd is from the official QS release※; the 2015 rank of 57th is from publicly available historical data. Precise ranks earlier than 2015 are not listed here, as public sources show inconsistencies; omitting them avoids misleading inferences.
Indicator highlights (QS 2026):
The metric CityU promoted most heavily in the QS 2026 cycle was Citations per Faculty, where it placed second globally:
2nd in the world for Citations per Faculty (behind only Harvard), 1st in Asia, surpassing Caltech※ — the university described this as "a record for Hong Kong higher education."
Additionally, in the QS 2026 edition, CityU led Hong Kong on four indicators: Faculty/Student Ratio, Citations per Faculty, International Faculty, and International Students※ (per the CityU press release).
QS Asia rankings: CityU rose to 7th in Asia and 3rd in Hong Kong in the QS Asia 2026 rankings※, up three places from 10th in the 2025 edition, and led Hong Kong — or topped the whole of Asia — on multiple indicators. For a full dissection of these metrics (including the interdisciplinary science ranking), see Patents, QS Asia & Interdisciplinary Rankings.
4. QS Methodology in Detail and the 2024 Overhaul
The reason QS is one of the composite rankings where CityU's strengths in citations per faculty and internationalisation shine brightest is directly tied to its indicator structure, which weights reputation, internationalisation, and per-capita citations heavily. Understanding the weightings is essential to reading the rank volatility.
Current QS indicator weightings (post-2024 revision):
| Indicator | Weight | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| Academic Reputation | 30% | Global survey of academics |
| Citations per Faculty | 20% | Normalised citation impact per academic (CityU strength: 2nd globally) |
| Employer Reputation | 15% | Global survey of employers |
| Faculty/Student Ratio | 10% | Proxy for teaching investment (CityU leads in HK) |
| International Faculty Ratio | 5% | CityU strength |
| International Students Ratio | 5% | CityU strength |
| International Research Network | 5% | Introduced 2024 |
| Employment Outcomes | 5% | Introduced 2024 |
| Sustainability | 5% | Introduced 2024 |
(Source: QS official methodology page※)
The 2024 revision and CityU's rank dip: The QS 2024 edition (released June 2023) represented the largest methodological adjustment in the ranking's 20-year history, adding three new indicators — sustainability, employment outcomes, and international research network — at 5% each, at the cost of halving the Faculty/Student Ratio weighting from 20% to 10%. CityU consequently slipped from 54th in QS 2023 to 70th in QS 2024※. This was not institutional "decline" — the scoring ruler was replaced. The university subsequently recovered under the new methodology, reaching 62nd in QS 2025 and 63rd in QS 2026. For a metric-by-metric account of how the weightings shifted and precisely which levers drove the 2025–2027 rebound, see QS & U.S. News: A Five-Year Deep Dive.
5. THE World University Rankings · Historical Trends
CityU's THE composite rank has been on a steady upward trajectory, climbing back from outside the top 100 in the 2022 edition to an all-time best of 73rd in the 2026 edition. It is worth noting, however, that CityU's two "world-number-one" calling cards within the THE framework — the "Most International University" title and the Industry pillar — are far more eye-catching than its composite rank.
| THE Edition | World Rank | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 | 73 (revised)※ | All-time best; initial October release ranked 75th; subsequently revised upwards by THE to 73rd※ |
| 2025 | 78※ | Improved on 2024 |
| 2024 | 82※ | Post THE methodology revision (WUR 3.0) |
| 2023 | 99※ | Returned to the world's top 100 |
| 2022 | 126 | Outside top 100 |
Two figures for the 2026 edition: THE first released CityU's rank as 75th in October 2025※; following a data revision, CityU was adjusted upwards to 73rd in November※. Both figures belong to the THE 2026 cycle; when citing, the revised 73rd should be treated as definitive, with a note that it is revised.
Indicator highlights (THE 2026):
- Industry pillar: CityU has held a perfect score and world #1 position for three consecutive years※ (per the CityU THE 2026 press release). Alongside "Most International," this is the university's other world-number-one calling card in the THE system. The university attributes this to industry-translation outcomes such as the HK Tech 300 entrepreneurship initiative.
- International Outlook: First in Hong Kong for eight consecutive years※.
- Interdisciplinary Science Ranking: 11th globally, 3rd in Asia, 1st in Hong Kong※ in THE's 2026 edition; for the precise scope of this ranking, see Patents, QS Asia & Interdisciplinary Rankings.
- Highly Cited Researchers: CityU has 32 academics named Clarivate Highly Cited Researchers for 2024, placing it 29th globally※; it has also led Hong Kong for nine consecutive years in the proportion of the world's most highly cited researchers※.
6. THE Methodology in Detail and the WUR 3.0 Revision
Of the four major rankings, THE employs the most dimensions — and is in that sense the most "composite" — spanning five pillars: Teaching, Research Environment, Research Quality, International Outlook, and Industry.
THE WUR 3.0 (from the 2024 edition) — five pillars (18 indicators in total):
| Pillar | Core content |
|---|---|
| Research Quality | Citation impact per paper + research strength/excellence/influence |
| Teaching | Teaching reputation, faculty–student ratio, doctorate–bachelor's ratio, doctorates awarded, etc. |
| Research Environment | Research reputation, research income, research output |
| International Outlook | International student/staff ratios, international co-authorship (world-class CityU strength) |
| Industry | Industry income + patents (CityU: world #1 for three years running) |
(In its 2026 edition, THE assessed 2,191 institutions across 115 countries/regions, using 18 indicators※)
THE's International Outlook and Industry pillars happen to be CityU's two strongest. Yet these two pillars carry relatively modest weight in the overall THE formula (International Outlook c. 7.5%, Industry c. 4%). In other words: the very things CityU excels at within the THE system — internationalisation and industry — have a structurally limited capacity to lift its composite ranking. This is a structural reason why the university's overall THE rank trails its world-leading single-pillar performances.
7. U.S. News Best Global Universities · Historical Trends
The U.S. News Best Global Universities ranking is built from a skeleton of pure bibliometrics (papers, citations, international collaboration, share of highly cited papers) plus a global research reputation survey; it does almost not at all assess undergraduate teaching. On this ranking, CityU has surgent sharply in recent years, reaching 47th globally and 3rd in Hong Kong in the 2026–2027 edition.
| U.S. News Edition | World Rank | Asia | Hong Kong | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2026–2027 | 47※ | — | 3※ | Rose a further 7 places from 54th in the previous edition; released June 2026※ |
| 2025–2026 | 54※ | 9※ | 3※ | Jumped 25 places from 79th in the 2024–2025 edition; 2,250 institutions assessed globally※ |
| 2024–2025 | 79※ | — | — | (the 2025–2026 "previous edition") |
The further 7-place surge in 2026–2027: CityU rose to 47th globally and 3rd in Hong Kong in the U.S. News 2026–2027 edition, released June 2026※, adding 7 places to the previous edition's 54th and extending its strong upward run on this table.
The 25-place jump in 2025–2026: CityU reached 54th globally, 9th in Asia (up 3 places), and 3rd in Hong Kong (up 1 place) in the U.S. News 2025–2026 edition, released June 2025※, a leap of 25 places from the previous edition's 79th. On the indicator for the share of papers in the top 10% most-cited, CityU ranked 15th globally※; the university also placed 15 subjects in the global top 50, 5 subjects in the global top 10, and 10 subjects first in Hong Kong※ (for a subject-level breakdown, see Subject Rankings).
U.S. News Best Global Universities employs indicators centred on academic research performance, with data supplied by Clarivate's Web of Science and InCites. It barely assesses undergraduate teaching, concentrating instead on the quality and impact of research output. This aligns closely with CityU's strengths in generating high-quality papers in fields such as materials science, chemistry, engineering, and nanotechnology, and is the principal driver of the university's ascent on this ranking.
8. ARWU / ShanghaiRanking's Academic Ranking of World Universities · Trends
The ARWU is the only one of the four rankings that contains zero subjective reputation survey. It is a purely objective academic table, heavily weighted towards Nobel Prizes/Fields Medals, papers in Nature and Science, and Highly Cited Researchers. CityU has historically placed outside the top 100 on this ranking; it broke into the global top 100 for the first time in the 2025 edition.
| ARWU Edition | World Rank | Hong Kong Rank | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2025 | 99※ | 2※ | First entry into the global top 100 since ARWU was launched in 2003※ |
| 2024 | 101–150 (band) | — | (ARWU provides banded ranks beyond the top 100) |
The historic 2025 breakthrough: CityU rose to 99th globally and 2nd in Hong Kong in the ARWU 2025, released August 2025※, making it one of only two Hong Kong universities in the ARWU global top 100※. In the 2025 edition, CityU's per-capita academic performance ranked first in Hong Kong※, and it placed second in Hong Kong on both the number of Highly Cited Researchers and the number of papers published in Nature and Science※.
ARWU's six indicators and weightings (purely academic; no reputation surveys, no teaching indicators):
| Indicator | Weight |
|---|---|
| Alumni winning Nobel Prizes or Fields Medals | 10% |
| Staff winning Nobel Prizes or Fields Medals | 20% |
| Highly Cited Researchers across subject categories | 20% |
| Papers published in Nature and Science | 20% |
| Total papers indexed in SCIE and SSCI | 20% |
| Per-capita academic performance (the above five indicators divided by FTE academic staff) | 10% |
(Source: ARWU official methodology and Wikipedia entry※)
Why CityU has historically placed low on ARWU — and how it broke through: ARWU is heavily weighted towards Nobel Prizes, elite-journal papers, and — critically — absolute volume (only 10% is per-capita). This structurally favours large, old, Nobel-endowed universities. CityU, being young and compact, therefore long placed outside the top 100. Its 2025 breakthrough was driven primarily by per-capita performance and its share of Highly Cited Researchers — a profile consistent with CityU's identity as a compact, high-output institution; its "per-capita performance first in Hong Kong" on this ranking is precisely that story in numbers.
In Brief: Four Rulers, Four Weighting Logics
- QS: Nearly half the weight is reputation surveys plus internationalisation; citations per faculty account for 20%. CityU thrives on internationalisation and citations per faculty. The 2024 overhaul cost it ground temporarily, but it regained the lost places within two years.
- THE: The five-pillar model is the most "balanced," yet CityU's two strongest pillars (International Outlook, Industry) happen to carry the lowest weight. World-number-one performances on single pillars translate into only modest movement in the composite.
- U.S. News: An almost purely bibliometric exercise with no teaching component. CityU's rising paper and citation volumes are converted into rank gains in the most direct possible way here.
- ARWU: A pure, objective table — the only one free of reputation surveying — weighted towards volume, Nobel Prizes, and elite journals. This is structurally unfavourable to a young, compact institution like CityU; it took per-capita performance and highly cited researcher share to finally crack the top 100 in 2025.
You need all four rankings side by side to see a university in the round. For a compact summary of the latest composite ranks, THE's three-peat as the world's most international university, and a critique of cross-table comparisons, see World Rankings at a Glance.

Criteria for future updates
This article was split from World Rankings at a Glance and carries the methodologies and year-by-year trends for all four rankings. Future updates will be incorporated into the main text only when they meet three classes of source: first, primary materials such as university websites, annual reports, faculty pages, or publications by regulatory and ranking bodies; second, verifiable facts drawn from reliable media, student media, or public archives; third, public timelines that explain institutional shifts. Isolated screenshots, undated rumours, ranking slogans of untraceable origin, and personal assessments remain leads for verification only and are not to be written directly as fact. Should a single ranking's annual update push this article beyond 12,000 words, it may be split again; otherwise, it will simply be supplemented each year.
