How the Four Major World Rankings Work: QS, THE, U.S. News and ARWU Methodologies and Historical Trends
The same university: QS says 52, U.S. News says 47, THE says 73, ARWU says 99. The gap of a few dozen places is no measurement error — it's four different rulers measuring four different things.
One day in June 2023, QS overhauled its World University Rankings methodology, and CityU slid from 54th to 70th — not because any department had suddenly declined, but because the weighting for "faculty/student ratio" was slashed in half while three new indicators were introduced simultaneously. The ruler itself had changed. Two years later, under that same new ruler, the same university bounced back to 52nd, its best result in over a decade. Behind swings this violent, it's all a game of indicator weighting. This article unpacks CityU's historical ranking curves and weighting structures across QS, THE, U.S. News, and ARWU to answer one question: what does each ranking actually "believe in"? For CityU's latest positions across all four comprehensive rankings at a glance, and its standout feat of being named THE's "Most International University in the World" for the third consecutive year, see the companion piece World Rankings Overview; for the five-year year-by-year figures and subject-level breakdowns under these methodologies, see QS and U.S. News: A Five-Year Deep Dive.
3. QS World University Rankings · Historical Trends
Over the past decade, CityU has generally fluctuated in the 48–70 band in the QS World University Rankings, holding a long-term position in the global top 100. The 2024 edition saw a temporary dip to 70th after QS's major methodology overhaul (which added indicators such as "Sustainability," "Employment Outcomes," and "International Research Network"), followed by a recovery. The QS 2027 edition jumped further to 52nd, its best result in recent years.
| QS edition year | World rank | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2027 | 52※ | Up 11 places from 63rd in the 2026 edition — best result in recent years; released June 2026※ |
| 2026 | 63※ | Held global top-100 status; 1,501 institutions ranked worldwide※ |
| 2025 | 62※ | Recovery from the overhaul year |
| 2024 | 70※ | Major QS methodology overhaul; rank fell |
| 2023 | 54※ | — |
| 2022 | 53 | — |
| 2021 | 48 | Best of the period |
| 2020 | 52 | — |
| 2019 | 55 | — |
| 2018 | 49 | — |
| 2015 | 57 | — |
The 2018–2021 figures (49 / 55 / 52 / 48) and the 2022–2026 figures (53 / 54 / 70 / 62 / 63) are cross-compiled from QS/TopUniversities historical data※ and third-party ranking aggregation pages※; the QS 2027 rank of 52 is per the official QS release※; the 2015 rank of 57 is per published historical data. Precise ranks before 2015 are omitted here, as public sources label them inconsistently and we would rather not mislead.
Indicator highlights (QS 2026):
CityU's most-publicised single indicator in QS 2026 is "Citations per Faculty," ranked 2nd globally:
Citations per Faculty: 2nd globally (behind only Harvard), 1st in Asia, ahead of Caltech※ — described by the University as "a record for a Hong Kong institution."
In addition, in QS 2026 CityU led all Hong Kong universities on faculty/student ratio, citations per faculty, international faculty, and international students※ (per CityU's official press release).
QS Asia ranking: CityU rose to 7th in Asia and 3rd in Hong Kong in QS Asia 2026※, up 3 places from 10th in Asia in the 2025 edition, leading Hong Kong on multiple indicators and topping all of Asia on some. For the full indicator breakdown (including the interdisciplinary science rankings), see Patents, QS Asia and the Interdisciplinary Rankings Explained.
4. QS Methodology Explained and the 2024 Overhaul
QS's ranking structure — heavily weighted toward reputation, internationalisation, and citations per faculty — is exactly why it is one of the aggregated rankings where CityU's "citations per faculty" and "internationalisation" strengths shine brightest. Understand the weights, and you can read the rank movements.
Current QS weights (post-2024 overhaul):
| Indicator | Weight | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Academic Reputation | 30% | Peer survey of scholars worldwide |
| Citations per Faculty | 20% | Standardised citations per faculty member (CityU's strength — 2nd globally) |
| Employer Reputation | 15% | Survey of employers worldwide |
| Faculty/Student Ratio | 10% | Proxy indicator for teaching input (CityU leads Hong Kong) |
| International Faculty Ratio | 5% | CityU strength |
| International Students Ratio | 5% | CityU strength |
| International Research Network | 5% | New in 2024 |
| Employment Outcomes | 5% | New in 2024 |
| Sustainability | 5% | New in 2024 |
(Per the official QS methodology page※)
The 2024 overhaul and CityU's dip: The QS 2024 edition (released June 2023) was the biggest methodology change in QS's 20-year history, adding three new indicators — Sustainability, Employment Outcomes, and International Research Network (5% each) — at the cost of cutting faculty/student ratio from 20% to 10%. CityU accordingly slid from 54th in QS 2023 to 70th in QS 2024※ — the University had not "declined"; the scoring ruler had simply been swapped. It has since recovered under the new system: 62nd in QS 2025, 63rd in QS 2026. For the item-by-item weighting changes and the specific fulcra of CityU's 2025–2027 rebound, see QS and U.S. News: A Five-Year Deep Dive.
5. THE World University Rankings · Historical Trends
CityU has been on a steady upward trajectory in the THE overall ranking in recent years, climbing from outside the top 100 in the 2022 edition to a historical best of 73rd in the 2026 edition. Notably, CityU's two "world No. 1" calling cards under THE's system — "Most International University" and the Industry pillar — are far more eye-catching than its overall position.
| THE edition year | World rank | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 | 73 (revised)※ | Historical best; initially published as 75 in the October edition, revised up to 73 following data corrections※ |
| 2025 | 78※ | Up from 2024 |
| 2024 | 82※ | After THE's methodology overhaul (WUR 3.0) |
| 2023 | 99※ | Back into the global top 100 |
| 2022 | 126 | Outside the top 100 |
Two figures in the 2026 edition: THE initially announced CityU at 75th in October 2025※; following data revisions, CityU was revised up to 73rd in November※. Both figures belong to the same THE 2026 edition; when citing, the revised 73rd should be used, with the word "revised" noted.
Indicator highlights (THE 2026):
- Industry pillar: CityU has held a perfect score and rank 1 worldwide for three consecutive years※ (per CityU's THE 2026 press release) — CityU's other world-No.1 calling card under THE's system, alongside "Most International University." The University attributes this to industry-transfer outcomes such as the HK Tech 300 entrepreneurship scheme.
- International Outlook: Rank 1 in Hong Kong for eight consecutive years※.
- Interdisciplinary science ranking: 11th globally, 3rd in Asia, 1st in Hong Kong※ in THE 2026; methodological details in Patents, QS Asia and the Interdisciplinary Rankings Explained.
- Highly cited researchers: CityU has 32 researchers named in Clarivate's 2024 "Highly Cited Researchers" list, 29th globally※; on "share of world's most highly cited researchers," rank 1 in Hong Kong for nine consecutive years※.
6. THE Methodology Explained and the WUR 3.0 Overhaul
THE is the most dimension-rich and arguably the most "comprehensive" of the four major rankings — spanning five pillars: Teaching, Research Environment, Research Quality, International Outlook, and Industry.
THE WUR 3.0 (from the 2024 edition) five pillars (18 indicators in total):
| Pillar | Core substance |
|---|---|
| Research Quality | Citation impact per paper + research strength/excellence/influence |
| Teaching | Teaching reputation, faculty/student ratio, PhD-to-bachelor's ratio, number of doctorates awarded, etc. |
| Research Environment | Research reputation, research income, research productivity |
| International Outlook | International student/faculty ratios, international co-authored papers (a world-class CityU strength) |
| Industry | Industry income + patents (CityU has ranked No. 1 worldwide for three consecutive years) |
(In the THE 2026 edition 2,191 institutions across 115 countries/regions were assessed using 18 indicators※)
THE's "International Outlook" and "Industry" pillars happen to be CityU's two strongest — yet they carry relatively low weight in THE's overall ranking (International Outlook ~7.5%, Industry ~4%). In other words: CityU's world-class strengths under THE's system (internationalisation, industry) do little to lift its overall position — which is the structural reason its comprehensive rank sits below its individual world-leading indicators.
7. U.S. News Best Global Universities · Historical Trends
The U.S. News Best Global Universities ranking is built on a skeleton of purely research-based bibliometrics (papers, citations, international collaboration, share of highly cited papers) plus global research reputation, with essentially no assessment of undergraduate teaching. CityU has surged markedly on this ranking in recent years, reaching 47th globally and 3rd in Hong Kong in the 2026–2027 edition.
| U.S. News edition | World rank | Asia | Hong Kong | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2026–2027 | 47※ | — | 3※ | Up another 7 places from 54th in the previous edition; released June 2026※ |
| 2025–2026 | 54※ | 9※ | 3※ | A leap of 25 places from 79th in the 2024–2025 edition; 2,250 institutions assessed globally※ |
| 2024–2025 | 79※ | — | — | (i.e., the predecessor to the "2025–2026" edition) |
The 2026–2027 leap (7 places): In the U.S. News 2026–2027 edition released June 2026, CityU rose to 47th globally and 3rd in Hong Kong※, up another 7 places from 54th in the previous edition — continuing its strong upward run on this ranking.
The 2025–2026 leap (25 places): In the U.S. News 2025–2026 edition released June 2025, CityU rose to 54th globally, 9th in Asia (up 3), and 3rd in Hong Kong (up 1)※, a 25-place jump from 79th in the previous edition. CityU was 15th globally on the "proportion of papers among the top 10% most cited" indicator※, and had 15 subjects in the global top 50, 5 subjects in the global top 10, and 10 subjects ranked 1st in Hong Kong※ (subject details in Subject Rankings).
U.S. News Best Global Universities uses indicators centred on academic research performance, with data supplied by Clarivate's Web of Science and InCites. It barely assesses undergraduate teaching, focusing instead on the quality and impact of research output — which aligns closely with CityU's high-quality paper output in strengths such as materials, chemistry, engineering and nanoscience, and is the main reason for its surge on this ranking.
8. ARWU / ShanghaiRanking (Academic Ranking of World Universities) · Trends
The ShanghaiRanking ARWU is the only one of the four that contains no subjective reputation survey at all — a purely objective academic ranking heavily weighted toward "hard" indicators such as Nobel Prizes/Fields Medals, papers in Nature and Science, and highly cited researchers. CityU has long sat outside the top 100 on this ranking; the 2025 edition saw it break into the global top 100 for the first time.
| ARWU edition year | World rank | Hong Kong rank | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2025 | 99※ | 2※ | First entry into the global top 100 since ARWU was founded in 2003※ |
| 2024 | 101–150 (band) | — | (Band ranking; beyond 100th, precise ranks are not given) |
The 2025 historical breakthrough: CityU rose to 99th globally and 2nd in Hong Kong in ARWU 2025, released August 2025※, becoming one of only two Hong Kong institutions in the ARWU global top 100※. In ARWU 2025, CityU ranked 1st in Hong Kong on "per capita (per headcount) performance,"※ and 2nd in Hong Kong on both "number of highly cited researchers" and "papers in Nature & Science"※.
ARWU's six indicator weights (purely academic — no reputation surveys, no teaching metrics):
| Indicator | Weight |
|---|---|
| Alumni winning Nobel Prizes/Fields Medals | 10% |
| Staff winning Nobel Prizes/Fields Medals | 20% |
| Highly cited researchers across disciplines | 20% |
| Papers in Nature and Science | 20% |
| Total papers indexed in SCIE + SSCI | 20% |
| Per capita (per headcount) performance on the above five | 10% |
(Per the official ARWU methodology and the Wikipedia entry※)
Why CityU lags on ARWU for years yet manages a breakthrough: ARWU rewards Nobel Prizes, top-journal papers, and highly cited researchers, with an emphasis on totals (only 10% is per capita) — favouring large, established universities with Nobel laureates. CityU is young and compact, hence its long spell outside the top 100. Its 2025 breakthrough rests mainly on per-capita performance and share of highly cited researchers — consistent with CityU's profile as "small but excellent, high output per capita"; its "1st in Hong Kong on per-capita performance" on this ranking is precisely that point made concrete.
Summary: Four Rulers, Four Weighting Logics
- QS: Nearly half its weight goes to reputation surveys plus internationalisation, with citations per faculty at 20% — CityU gains from internationalisation and citations per faculty, lost ground in the 2024 overhaul, and made it back within two years.
- THE: The most "balanced" five-pillar structure — yet CityU's two strongest pillars (International Outlook, Industry) carry the lowest weights. A world-No.1 single indicator moves the overall rank surprisingly little.
- U.S. News: Almost purely bibliometric, no teaching dimension — CityU's paper and citation growth is cashed out most directly here.
- ARWU: The only ranking with no reputation survey at all; weighs totals and Nobel-level output — structurally disadvantageous for a young, compact university like CityU, which only broke through in 2025 on the back of per-capita performance and highly-cited share.
Only by setting the four side by side can you see the whole university. For the latest positions on all four comprehensive rankings, THE's three-peat internationalisation title, and cross-comparison critique, see World Rankings Overview.
